HOW INDIA CHINA BORDER DISPUTE STARTED:
During
the Qing dynasty rule in China, Tibet was under China’s control. After the
collapse of Qing dynasty, The Tibet proclaimed it’s independence in 1911-1912.
In 1913-14, the British and Tibet signed an agreement in Simla and it is called
as "Simla Agreement", where McMahon proposed drawing of borders and based on that
agreement the McMahon line was drawn.
Till date Chinese
government refused to accept the border line based on Simla agreement, in the
agreement it is mentioned as Tibet had always been part of China. Aksai Chin is
a place, India claims Aksai Chin as a part of India in the western sector. But
China used it to invade the Tibet during Dogra kingdom in Kashmir during 1950.
In 1953 India made its stand clear on the eastern side by controlling Tawang
the territory south of McMahon Line.
After Panchsheel
agreement in 1954, the MEA was informed to draw new map with Aksai Chin as the
part of India. China did not object to the map and which made Nehru to take as
no opposition and China agreed to the border agreement. Later China refused to
accept the border based on McMahon line and started building roads in Aksai
Chin.
The situation
later resulted in Indo-China war which was dominated by China. The major
drawback at that time for India was untrained troops for higher altitude,
movement of logistics and military equipment’s. After the war India started
building its Army and also focused on infrastructure development across Indo-China boarder.
At the end of
1980’s China came forward for ambassador level talk over the border issue.
During 1988, PM Rajiv Gandhi went to China and formed Joint Working Group on
border issue. Since then the border remained calm.
An agreement to
maintain peace was signed on 1993. Then in 1996 and 2006 important confidence
building measures on boundary issues were signed.
Whats happening now?
At present the two sides are agreed for partial disengagement of the troops in the stand-off areas. There was effective communication taken place and proper handling of situation through diplomatic and military channels. Permanent solution has to be attained in order to avoid this kind of tension in the border issue.
Good oneππ.
